Specific TeamBG Utility FAQs

If you have questions about the Spell Maker, I recommend:

General TeamBG FAQ

If you want/need help with the use and/or purpose of TeamBG utilities, I recommend:

Supplimental TeamBG FAQ

Read this stuff, do not ask about this stuff on the message boards. It's here for you so you do not have to ask:

  1. What is a ZIP file? What is WinZip?
    1. Read this!
  2. Why can't I see file extensions in Windows?
    1. Do this so you can... Step 1 - Step 2
  3. I need some help with BG. (or) I have run into this technical problem with the game and can't figure out what to do. Where can I get help?
    1. Sil's Valinor - Go to the "FAQ, tips, & troubleshooting" section.
    2. Interplay Message Boards - Select from many (BG, TotSC, BG2, etc).
  4. How do I use custom portraits?
    1. You have two options (at least). Either read the README.TXT file that came with BG (it tells you what you need to know), or read the instructions and info Lady Nightshade and Gustov Montessi (her webmaster) have provided for you in the custom portraits section!
  5. Can you tell me about any BG cheat codes?
    1. Cheat codes, heck yeah...we discovered 1/2 of them! Look here...BG Cheat Codes.
  6. What is the font used for the main Baldur's Gate logo in the game and on the box?
    1. It seems to be a customized version of a font called "Celtic" or "Celtic Bold". Here are many Celtic fonts, "celticbold.ttf" is very close to the font used for BG...Celtic Fonts.
  7. How do I keep my data files from being damaged or getting corrupt? (or) Ack! All the text (or data) in my game is whacked, help!!!
    1. Always, let me repeat that...ALWAYS backup your data. Some utilities may automatically do this, but others do not. If you want to mess with the game's data then take some responsibility for yourself and backup sensative files often. For instance, ALL text in BG is in one file ("dialog.tlk"), importing custom items or spells adds text to this file. If something happens (and with computers something ALWAYS happens) to this file, all your game's texts will be whacky...so make a backup copy of this file. I recommend one good clean backup after you install all components of the official game and patches, and then daily and/or prior to large custom item/spell importing sessions!
  8. Okay, I messed up big time and did not follow the warnings here to backup my "dialog.tlk" file frequently so that I could fairly easily recover from having a corrupt "dialog.tlk" file...now what should I do?
    1. Maybe you should quit trying to mess with this game if you cannot be careful about it! But seriously...all you need is a nice clean official version of "dialog.tlk". So go grab the latest official patch for your game and install it. (Make sure you get the right one...there is one for BG and there is another one if you have TotSC installed...and of course international versions too.)
    2. Warning...read the next Q&A about your Override folder before you install an official patch!
  9. Is there anything I should know before installing TotSC or an official patch for BG or TotSC?
    1. Yes! Be aware that these things will happen every time you install either an official patch or upgrade BG to TotSC:
      1. The main EXE (executable) file will be replaced. This will cause the experience cap to be re-instated if you had disabled it before with the "Godlike" experience cap remover. You can simply run "Godlike" again and re-remove the cap.
      2. Your "dialog.tlk" file will be replaced. This will cause all custom item/spell texts to be wiped out from your game. You may not be able to do anything about this as the TotSC upgrade and official patch installations may very much depend on their new versions of this file. You will really need to re-import custom items after doing this.
      3. Your "Override" folder will be deleted and replaced with whatever the upgrade/patch wants in there. Again your custom items will get wiped out and you will have to re-import them.
    2. The moral of this story is...install as much of the official stuff (TotSC and patch) as possible prior to importing custom items/spells!
  10. When will a new version of [insert utility name here] be available, it seems like it's been forever since the last update?
    1. Hey! Nobody here is getting paid to do this, take what you get and be happy. If you expect more, then give more (if at all). There are not very many people making these utilities (usually only 1 to 3 people at any one time is actively working on any utility), we need more help (see the "Help Wanted" section)!
    2. The other dimension to this is that everyone involved has either a real job to pay the bills or school, and family, etc...these come before providing free software and utilities to web leeches!
